Octsober – Ride for Recovery

The month of October has been deemed ‘Octsober’, where South Africans and all those around the world are being asked to quit drinking for the month, as part of a campaign to raise awareness about alcohol abuse. Living Hope understands first hand the devastating effects alcohol abuse can have on an individual and family, because of this they have created a Ride for Recovery event, where they take to the roads to raise funds and awareness of their Recovery Programme.

Muizenberg Shark Attack Victim Doing Well

sharksA 20-year-old student is recovering well in a Cape Town hospital after being bitten by shark at Muizenberg beach in the Cape Peninsula on Friday. Matthew Smithers sustained multiple lacerations.

He was attacked by a great white shark while surfing at the beach. He sustained multiple lacerations to his legs and is recovering in the Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Pinelands.

Smithers says: “I was surfing out at Muizenberg for about half an hour when I was facing towards the back line, the shark attacked me from underneath, behind me, and attacked my board and both legs. The shark bit into me and I flew off my board and looked at the shark, it circled me once and then left me alone and proceeded to paddle back on my board to the beach.”

Smithers say he is lucky to be alive. “I received a lot of help from the locals and the medic teams were very good. I was very lucky in term of the bites. No bone damage was done. I only suffered four quite deep wounds in each leg, but seems all right, I feel fine, happy and grateful.”

The City of Cape Town has meanwhile reopened Muizenberg beach but has warned beach users to exercise extreme caution when entering the water.
